Juventus came from behind to beat Benfica on penalties in the International Champions Cup on Saturday.

But Benfica were dealt a huge blow when Facundo Ferreya was stretchered off wearing a neck brace towards the end of the first half.

Eduardo Salvio had the game’s first chance in the 9th minute but the Argentine winger could only force a comfortable save from Wojciech Szczęsny.

A minute later, Claudio Marchisio should have scored after being played in by Miralem Pjanić, but his effort went harmlessly over the bar.

The first half yielded little else in terms of action, until Benfica’s summer signing Ferreyra left the field on a stretcher with a nasty looking neck injury after going up for a challenge.

Juventus made a number of changes at the break and went close to scoring early in the second half when JoĂŁo Cancelo and Sami Khedira both had good chances. In the 54th minute, Khedira found himself in on goal, but his attempted chip was denied by the goalkeeper.

In the 61st minute, some nice Juventus build-up play ended with Federico Bernardeschi firing over from just outside the area.

But then, somewhat against the run of play, Benfica took the lead when Alex Grimaldo’s stunning 25-yard free-kick flew past Mattia Perin and into the top corner.

The Bianconeri almost found an equaliser in the 76th minute when Clemenza’s free-kick found the head of Mehdi Benatia, but the Moroccan’s effort cannoned back off the crossbar.

But with six minutes of normal time remaining, Juve did level thanks to a brilliant strike from Clemenza to send the match towards a penalty shoot-out.

Alex Sandro almost snatched a winner late on but his header was saved well by Odisseas Vlachodimos in the Benfica goal and penalties beckoned.

Keaton Parks scored Benfica’s first spot-kick before NicolĂČ Fagioli equalised for Juve.

Jonas Gonçalves Oliveira then hit the post with his effort, and Emre Can stepped up to make it 2-1.

Next, Franco Cervi made it 2-2 only for Stefano Beltrame to make it 3-2.

Perin then saved the next spot-kick and Alex Sandro stepped up to win the game.
