Newcastle need extra time to beat Oxford

Newcastle named what amounted to their strongest XI here at the Kassam Stadium as they looked to make the fifth round for the first time in nearly 15 years.

It was a sell-out crowd at Grenoble Road with West Brom ready to face the winners and it took all of 20 minutes for the Premier League side to make their quality show. Joelinton laying off Sean Longstaff, who rifled in from the edge of the area past Simon Eastwood.

Karl Robinson’s were starting to get back into the game after a slow start but they couldn’t do anything about Newcastle’s second, as a good pass from Longstaff found Joelinton, who broke with pace and finished brilliantly.

The home team weren’t deterred though and should have got one back almost immediately, only for Sam Long’s piledriver to be cleared off the line by Jamaal Lascelles.

It was Nathan Holland’s turn next to have his effort go agonisingly close for Oxford but it just wasn’t going in for the Yellows before half time.

After the break the promotion-pushers were once again taking the game to their Premier League rivals but just didn’t have the cutting edge of their opponents.

Cameron Brannagan and Marcus Browne went relatively close with efforts but never really troubled Karl Darlow.

It wasn’t until the 84th minute that Darlow was troubled, with Liam Kelly taking a sumptuous free-kick that whipped past the goalkeeper and into the top right-hand corner.

And in injury time Oxford completed the comeback thanks to a stunning volley from Holland, who rifled an effort past Darlow.

Going into extra time and the momentum was with Robinson’s side. Holland once again was in the thick of the action but his finishing touch deserted him when he needed it most.

Allan Saint-Maximin was causing his own issues at the other end, but his final product was also glaring by its absence in the final third.

But it was the Frenchman who ultimately won the tie for Newcastle, bursting down the left and finishing expertly from the edge of the area.

Birmingham edge Coventry after spot kicks

Coventry travelled to their landlords Birmingham with the winners of this tie facing Leicester in the fifth round.

But in a fairly dull first half the only real effort on target came from the home side as Caolan Boyd-Munce’s dangerous free kick was just about cleared away by the Sky Blues defence.

But the deadlock was eventually opened on 51 minutes as Coventry netted against the run of play thanks to a well-taken finish from Amadou Bakayoko.

Birmingham should have been level late on as Jeremie Bela went close with a low drive but they eventually did find a way in stoppage time as Harlee Dean nodded in an equaliser.

Into extra time and much like the match itself it was a scrappy affair.

But Coventry pressured and pressured and finally got their goal on 114 minutes as Maxime Biamou slotted in to complete his run of scoring in every round so far.

But as was the theme of the evening, the drama didn’t end there as Jeremie Bela equalised with the very last kick of the game to take the match into penalties.

And from 12 yards, it was Birmingham who won out 4-1.

Derby delighted as Rooney inspires win

It took until the 25th minute for either side to register a shot on target here, but when they did it was Tom Lawrence who had a crack from 25 yards that went straight down David Cornell’s throat.

As perhaps was expected it was Wayne Rooney, from his deep position, who was running the show – treating fans to an array of passes but ultimately struggling to break down a spirited Cov side.

But it was another former Premier League player who opened the scoring on half an hour as Andre Wisdom nodded in Rooney’s corner.

And it didn’t take the Rams long to double their lead as Duane Holmes was sent through on goal and finished well from close range.

After the break though, it was the Cobblers who came out strongest and equalised straight away as Nicky Adams blasted in from close range thanks to a wonderful Paul Anderson cross.

Derby’s two-goal lead was quickly restored just moments later however as Jack Marriott pounced for the home team’s third of the night.

But they weren’t done there as Lawrence fouled inside the area for a penalty, with Rooney stepping up to blast in from 12 yards.

There was another penalty late on however as Northampton got one of their own – Sam Hoskins scored to give Northampton the glimmer of a comeback, but it just wasn’t to be.

Royals down Bluebirds after penalty drama

The first goal of the night belonged to Cardiff and it was Josh Murphy who did the damage thanks to a lovely finish on 20 minutes.

The home side dominated the first half thereafter but just couldn’t make their dominance pay thanks to some profligate finishing.

This was the third game in 10 days between these two sides but this was comfortably the most entertaining with the Royals also going close a few times.

Into the second half though and it was the hosts who doubled their lead on 54 minutes as Robert Glatzel finished well into the bottom corner.

But the visitors weren’t giving up and with 20 minutes to go pulled one back thanks to Omar Richards.

And the turnaround was complete on 79 minutes as Andy Rinomhota brought the scoreline all square with a lovely goal.

It was their third straight draw meaning the match would go to extra time.

Into the added 30 minutes and it was the hosts who got themselves back in front as Josh Murphy netted his second after latching on to a fantastic through ball.

But this mad night of Cup action wasn’t done as Reading got yet another equaliser with Yakou Meite the man to thank.

They couldn’t be split so the match went to penalties with Reading ultimately winning out.
