Vincent Kompany’s time as Anderlecht player-manager has been far from plain sailing so far.

The former Manchester City captain failed to win any of his first five matches in charge of his boyhood club and was recently forced to hand match day managerial responsibilities over to his assistant so that he could focus on the playing side of his role.

The 33-year-old defender has also come in for criticism back in his homeland, with former Belgium international forward Marc Degryse writing in his newspaper column: “I have the feeling that he thinks he is God.”

But on Sunday, with their injured player-coach watching on from the stands, Anderlecht finally picked up their first three points of the season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Standard Liège.

And after the game, Kompany headed to a small bar close to the club’s Lotto Park stadium, where he delivered an impassioned speech to around 50 supporters, as captured by The Athletic’s Sam Lee.

Kompany has been forced to withdraw from the Belgium squad for the upcoming EURO 2020 qualifiers against San Marino and Scotland, but the four-time Premier League champion will soon return to his old stomping ground for his Manchester City testimonial, which will take place at the Etihad Stadium on 11 September.
