On Tuesday, Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry became the latest player to net an incredible four goals in a single Champions League match.

Since the Champions League changed its format in 1992/93 (and not including play-offs) only 11 players had previously managed a quadruple of goals in Europe’s premier club competition.

Marco van Basten kicked things off when he scored four times – including superb bicycle kick – as AC Milan routed IFK Göteborg in the 1992 group stage.

It took seven years before that feat was repeated, as Simone Inzaghi scored four times for Lazio against Marseille.

In 2003/04, Croatian forward Dado Pršo bagged four goals in just 23 minutes in Monaco’s stunning 8-3 victory over Deportivo de La Coruña.

The following season, Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy punished Sparta Prague with four goals, before AC Milan’s Andriy Shevchenko did the same to Fenerbahçe in 2005.

But it took until 2010 before somebody scored four goals in a Champions League knockout match.

And they came from who else but Lionel Messi in a quarter-final tie with Arsenal.

In 2011, Bafétimbi Gomis scored what remains the Champions League’s fastest ever hat-trick when he netted three times in seven minutes for Lyon against Dinamo Zagreb before adding a fourth for good measure later on.

The same season, Mario Gómez scored four in Bayern Munich’s Round of 16 demolition of FC Basel and in 2013, Robert Lewandowski stunned Real Madrid when he scored all four goals in Borussia Dortmund’s 4-1 thrashing of the Spanish giants.

But this list would not be complete without two giants of the game.

The first is Zlatan Ibrahimović, who scored four for Paris Saint-Germain against Anderlecht in 2012.

And then there’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who did the same for Real Madrid against Malmö in 2015.

Finally, a special mention for Leo Messi and Luiz Adriano, who are the only two players in Champions League history to have scored five times in a single match.
