Valencia’s Copa del Rey hopes were dealt a huge blow by a freak goal when they took on Real Betis on Thursday evening.
Loren Morón had given Betis the lead on the stroke of half-time at Benito Villamarín Stadium and nine minutes into the second half, Joaquín made it 2-0.
And what a strange goal it was.
The 37-year-old’s in-swinging corner bamboozled goalkeeper Jaume Doménech and a consultation with the VAR confirmed that the whole of the ball had crossed the line.
Valencia did grab a goal back through Denis Cheryshev in the 69th minute before Kevin Gameiro netted a 93rd minute equaliser, which should make things a lot more interesting when the semi-final second leg rolls around at the end of the month.
