On Friday, Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July 2017, announced his retirement from football at the age of just 32.

A Nigeria international, Ikeme made 205 appearances for Wolves and also enjoyed loan spells at the likes of Queens Park Rangers, Middlesbrough and Leicester City along with a number of other clubs.

In June, Ikeme announced he was in “complete remission” but he has ultimately decided to hang up his gloves after consulting with medical experts.

“The doctor suggested I should retire after the toll the treatment has taken on my body. I can’t really risk trying to come back,” he told Wolves’ official website.

“My health is my main thing. I just want to be here for my children, family and friends. In the grand scheme of things, with your life in danger, it’s a minimum price I have to pay to spend the rest of my time with my family.

“I’m happy with what I’ve achieved.”

Goalkeeping can be a lonely profession and those who play the position are known for sticking together and supporting each other. The Goalkeepers’ Union, if you will.

Just hours after Ikeme’s announcement, Wolves posted a video to their official Twitter account in which famous goalkeepers from across the world – including Iker Casillas, Joe Hart, Kevin Trapp, Walter Zenga and many more – paid a touching tribute to their retiring colleague.

Brilliant work everyone. There’s only one Carl Ikeme.
