Mexico’s hottest prospect, 18-year-old Diego Lainez, made his European debut on Thursday in Real Betis’ Europa League round-of-32 first-leg clash with Stade Rennais.

Despite his side trailing 2-0 within the first nine minutes, Real Betis made a stunning comeback and the match finished 3-3 in large part to the young winger’s contributions.

Lainez came on much earlier than anticipated, replacing the injured Junior Firpo in the 27th minute.

Five minutes later, he was a part of the build-up that led to Giovani Lo Celso’s opening goal to cut the deficit in half.

The former Club América star nearly scored toward the end of the first half, but his blast from the top of the box went straight at the goalkeeper.

However, in the 90th minute from a corner, Lainez hit a sensational half-volley into the far corner for his first goal in a Real Betis shirt.

Real Betis had 75 per cent possession and will be heavy favorites when the two sides meet next Thursday, 21 February.
