DarĂo Benedetto scored in the 44th minute of the second leg of the 2018 Copa Libertadores final to give Boca Juniors a 3-2 aggregate lead, and he took the time to celebrate in some style.
After Benedetto netted his goal, he stuck his tongue out at River Plate defender Gonzalo Montiel and the image became an instant meme, especially since River ended up coming back to win the final.
However, Benedetto was far from offended and repeated the celebration recently after scoring against Newell’s Old Boys.
On Monday, the 28-year-old went on ESPN to explain his case.
“I like to celebrate well, what can I do?” he said, with a half smile on his face.
“It’s my new celebration. It’s when you have to show even more that you’re still standing and you have the personality to continue doing it.
“As long as I keep scoring goals, I’m going to take it as a challenge because I like to gloat a bit.”
Benedetto will have a chance to celebrate once again when his third-placed side host Lanús this Sunday.
