Organisational issues have led to confrontations between fans and police outside the Maracanã stadium in Brazil on Sunday.

The Taça Guanabara Final between Fluminense and Vasco da Gama did start but with no fans inside the stadium.

Supporters were only allowed in 30 minutes into the match.

Fans of each side had not been able to agree which side of the stadium they would occupy before local authorities came to the realisation they did not have enough security to police the situation.

A decision was then made not to allow any fans into the ground. Unfortunately, the 35,000 fans waiting to get into the stadium were not told until minutes before kick-off.

The result? Confusion and chaos, with fans ultimately clashing with police.

Authorities used pepper spray and explosives in an attempt to disperse crowds.
