The league leaders were made to wait for the opening goal at the Vitality Stadium but it came in the 35th minute when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain latched onto a super Jordan Henderson ball over the tap and steered past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The Reds then lost Dejan Lovren to injury but on the stroke of half-time, it was 2-0 courtesy of Naby Keïta following a lovely bit in ingenuity from Mohamed Salah on the edge of the box.

In the 55th minute, it was Keïta’s turn to set up Salah with a delightful slide-rule pass which the Egyptian finished with aplomb for 3-0.

And that was how it finished.

José Mourinho’s men responded in perfect fashion to their mid-week defeat at Manchester United when Harry Kane gave them the lead against Burnley with a stunning strike after just four minutes.

Lucas Moura then tapped home from close range to make it 2-0 in the 9th minute, before Son Heung-min made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute with an incredible solo goal.

The South Korean picked up the ball deep inside his own half and beat almost the entire Clarets team before finishing past Nick Pope. A goal of the season contender Lionel Messi would have been proud of.

And Kane then got his second of the game to make it 4-0 in the 54th minute.

Then, with 15 minutes to go, Moussa Sissoko completed the rout when he curled a beautiful effort into the bottom corner after some nice link up with Kane.

Watford v Crystal Palace

With Hayden Mullins still in charge for this game, new Hornets boss Nigel Pearson watched from the stands as both sides struggled to fashion chances in a goalless first half.

Things didn’t improve match after the interval with the match yielding just three attempts on target (all of which came from Watford) 0-0 was how it finished.

But it might have been a different story if the Hornets hadn’t had a decent late penalty turned down.
