It’s fair to say Eliaquim Mangala’s spell at Manchester City wasn’t exactly a roaring success.
After joining from Porto for a reported £42m, the French defender enjoyed a stellar debut in which he had Diego Costa in his pocket in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
But in his second game, he scored an own goal and gave a penalty away against Hull City and things only went south from there.
Mangala became a figure of fun during his time in Manchester and after featuring sporadically during the 2017/18 campaign, he completely dropped off the radar and didn’t make a single appearance last season.
After five years, 79 appearances and zero goals, the 28-year-old was allowed to join Valencia on a free transfer earlier this month.
But being able to laugh at yourself is a fine quality and it turns out ‘Big Quimmy Mang’ (as some City fans dubbed him) has quite the propensity for self-deprecation.
Earlier this week, he posted the following brilliant comparison with Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk to his Instagram story …
At least, we hope he wasn’t being serious anyway.
