On Thursday night, Corinthians hosted Independiente del Valle in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana semi-finals.
Though Fábio Carille’s side were expected to put on a strong performance, the Ecuadorians won 2-0 and now have a foot in the final thanks to a brace from Gabriel Torres.
Timão will now have to score three goals at the Atahualpa Olympic Stadium next Thursday if they want to have a shot to win their first Sudamericana title.
The first half was very much disputed in the midfield until the 18th minute, when Corinthians midfielder Mateus Vital hit the post.
Just before half-time, the Corinthians defence lost track of Gabriel Torres and smashed his shot into the far corner to give the visitors the lead in the 44th minute.
In the second half, Gustagol, who had come on as a half-time substitute, had an early chance but Independiente goalkeeper Jorge Pinos was there to make the save.
Corinthians were on the front foot most of the match and the Ecuadorians took advantage on the counter in the 69th minute as Alejandro Cabeza served a perfect cross for Torres to double their lead.
