The first round of Wednesday Premier League fixtures this season did not disappoint.

Abraham the difference

Tammy Abraham returned to the Chelsea side after passing a late fitness test and the change in the Blues was obvious from the off.

With the England international leading the line, the west London side were much improved from their weekend defeat to West Ham – still though, chances were at a premium in the opening exchanges.

But, going with the script, it was Abraham who scored the first of the game on 25 minutes as he ghosted between two defenders and headed past Tom Heaton.

The away team weren’t deterred though and came roaring back on the stroke of half-time as Trezeguet fumbled in a cross from the right to equalise.

But almost immediately after the break the hosts were back in front. A fantastic chest down from Abraham found Mason Mount, who volleyed in sensationally.

That was all that Frank Lampard’s side needed, as they stayed in fourth place.

Seventh heaven for Vardy

Leicester were coming into this game with their eyes fixed firmly on Manchester City’s second place, and almost got off to the perfect start. A Jamie Vardy effort was saved by Ben Foster, but Ayoze Perez’s rebound blazed over the bar.

Brendan Rodgers’ men were playing with the confidence we’ve come to expect after their blistering start to the campaign, but the only thing that was missing from their performance was a goal.

VAR was the saviour for the Foxes at the weekend but here it unbelievably didn’t give a penalty to the hosts after what looked like a clear foul on Vardy.

They did eventually get their penalty though, with Adam Messina shoving Jonny Evans in the area just after half time.

And for a seventh game in a row, Vardy scored for Leicester.

It took the east Midlands outfit above City and continued their sensational run under the Northern Irish coach who added an extra gloss right at the end as James Maddison doubled their advantage.

Easy as it gets

David Martin kept his place in the West Ham goal after his heroic debut against Chelsea at the weekend, but the veteran shot-stopper’s proud clean sheet record in the Premier League was ended here after only after 25 minutes.

A corner from Joao Moutinho found Leander Dendoncker, who tapped in on the volley from close range.

The home side looked comfortable throughout and should have added a second after half-time only for Raul Jimenez’s header to be saved expertly by Martin.

But there was nothing the goalkeeper could do about Wolves’ second goal, as Patrick Cutrone gathered the ball outside the area and slotted into the bottom left-hand corner.

Climbing the ladder

It was a basement battle at St Mary’s and the opening exchanges said as much with both sides tentative in their approach.

Nathan Redmond and Teemu Pukki had the only half-chances in a fairly dull first 20 minutes but the game burst into life soon after with the opening goal.

A delicious cross from James Ward-Prowse found Danny Ings, who headed home his ninth of the season from close range.

Norwich looked bereft after the opener and soon let in a second. A corner from the right was flicked on at the near post, and there was Ryan Bertrand to tap in for his first of the campaign.

Saints were in cruise-control now but they paid for their relative lack of urgency after the break as Pukki pulled one back after a smart close range finish.

It wasn’t to be however for the Canaries as Southampton went above Everton and out of the relegation zone.
