The Spanish midfielder waved an emotional goodbye to the Chelsea fans during last weekend’s FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest.

The expectation all week has been that the World Cup winner will join the Ligue 1 strugglers after falling down the pecking order in west London.

And now that has been confirmed by Monaco, who have announced the 31-year-old’s arrival via Twitter.

Fábregas is expected to make his debut in Sunday evening’s clash with Marseille, before Les Monégasques host Nice – a side managed by another of his Arsenal team-mates, Patrick Vieira.

“It is a great pleasure to join AS Monaco, a new project for me, the former Barcelona midfielder told the club’s official website.

“The group is of quality with young players and a young coach. I’m here to help the team, I’m looking forward to starting, we have a great match to play in Marseille on Sunday.

“I am very excited.”
