In a quarter-final battle between the last two Liga MX champions, current title-holders Tigres took a firm grip on the tie with a pair of second-half goals to take a 2-1 advantage back home for Sunday’s second leg.

With Tigres being the higher seed, América must win the second leg by two goals or they will be out of the competition.

América dominated the match, outshooting Tigres by a 15-3 margin, though only two of their 15 shots were on target.

One of those came from Paraguayan Richard SĂĄnchez, who slammed home a rebound from outside the area to give the home side the lead in the 40th minute.

However, Tuca Ferretti changed up his team’s style and attitude at half-time, which paid immediate dividends when they applied pressure to earn a corner, which Guido Pizzarro thunderously headed home.

15 minutes later, VAR determined that Richard Sånchez had taken down Javier Aquino in the area, leading to André-Pierre Gignac slotting home the game-winning goal and 115th career goal for the club.

The two sides will meet this Sunday at 22:00 Eastern Standard Time.
