River Plate have now lost back-to-back Superliga matches for the first time since late 2017 as they were soundly beaten 2-1 at home against Unión de Santa Fe in a match that was originally supposed to be played in matchweek 12.

Despite 15 shots and 73 per cent possession, Juan Fernando Quintero’s 89th-minute consolation goal was River’s only shot on target the entire match.

Unión were able to make the most of it when they had the ball, with goals from Franco Fragapane and Diego Zabala coming in the 37th and 73rd minute, respectively.

Fragapane scored a penalty to put Unión ahead after an extremely controversial call.

Replay clearly showed that Franco Troyansky was fouled by Kevin Sibille outside the area.

Despite the misfortune, River did plenty to warrant a better result and constantly failed in the final third.

In the second half, thanks to a fantastic assist from Nelson Acevedo, Diego Zabala placed the ball into the bottom corner to double Unión’s lead and seemingly put the match out of reach.

In the 89th minute, Quintero shot the ball from just inside the centre circle, which took a massive deflection off Jonathan Bottinelli on its way into the back of the net – setting up a tense period of stoppage time.

Unión have now beaten Boca Juniors in River Plate in back-to-back weeks, though the Boca victory came in a friendly tournament.

River stay on 19 points and are currently in 12th place, while Unión is 10th in the league with 22 points.

River Plate will look to rebound on Sunday when they face Patronato, while Unión travel to Belgrano.
