If you enjoyed Tottenham’s exit at the hands of League Two opposition on Tuesday, Wednesday’s Carabao Cup action had plenty more giant-killings where that came from.

A United side featuring Paul Pogba and a number of youngsters peppered the Rochdale goal with 15 shots in the first half alone but it was 0-0 at half-time and it remained that way until Mason Greenwood finally broke the deadlock with 68 minutes on the clock.

But there was to be a huge twist to the tale when 16-year-old schoolboy Luke Matheson grabbed a dramatic late equaliser, sending the travelling Dale finds delirious behind the goal.

The match went to penalties, where the Red Devils ultimately prevailed, but what an effort from the visitors.

Villa victorious over fledgling Seagulls

A much-changed Villa XI found themselves 2-0 up at half-time against a youthful Brighton side thanks to goals from Jota and Conor Hourihane.

But 17-year-old Haydon Roberts gave Graham Potter’s side hope when he pulled a goal back early in the second half.

However, their hope was short-lived thanks to a game-clinching third goal from Villans substitute Jack Grealish.

Floodlight failure can’t stop brilliant Brewers

Last year’s semi-finalists Burton stunned their Premier League opponents when Oliver Sarkic fired in a volley after 14 minutes.

But the second half was disrupted when the Pirelli Stadium floodlights failed not once, not twice but three times.

After it appeared the match would be abandoned, the referee eventually allowed play to continue and it proved advantageous to the hosts as they soon went 2-0 up through Nathan Broadhead.

Chelsea in seventh heaven as Mariners are all at sea

Chelsea raced into a 2-0 lead at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Ross Barkley and Michy Batshuayi inside the first seven minutes.

But Grimsby soon halved the deficit when Matt Green raced onto a ball over the top and hammered a brilliant half-volley past Willy Caballero.

However, Pedro re-established the Blues’ two-goal lead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time before Kurt Zouma poked home a fourth goal early in the second half.

Reece James, Batshuayi and the returning Callum Hudson-Odoi then completed the rout with fifth, sixth and seventh goals late on.

Hoever cleans up for Liverpool in Milton Keynes

An experimental Liverpool side featuring the likes of Rhian Brewster, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones were given a helping hand when MK Dons goalkeeper Stuart Moore summoned the spirit of Lorius Karius to fumble a powerful James Milner effort into his own net for this game’s opening goal.

The hosts had their chances to equalise but in the second half, 17-year-old defender Ki-Jana Hoever bullet-headed home his first senior goal for the club to make it 2-0.

And that was how it finished.

Hammers get nailed by bullish Oxford

Elliott Moore gave the League One hosts a shock lead in the 55th minute at the Kassam Stadium.

And Matt Taylor then gave the hosts a shock 2-0 lead with 71 minutes on the clock.

Before Tariqe Fosu-Henry and Shandon Baptiste turned a surprised update into the result of the round by netting third and fourth goals late on.

Extraordinary stuff.

Black Cats claim another Premier League scalp

The League One visitors took a shock early lead at Bramall Lane when Max Power powered home a thunderous 30-yard strike into the top corner after just nine minutes.

And that was how it stayed, meaning Sunderland have now seen off top flight opposition for the second round in a row, having dumped Burnley out last time.

Wolves survive late Royals scare to go through

A howler from Reading goalkeeper João Virgínia gifted 20-year-old midfielder Bruno Jordão a goal on his Wolves debut at Molineaux.

It looked like Nuno Espírito Santo’s side were heading into the fourth round, only for Reading’s Lucas Boyé to score a dramatic equaliser in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
