Bayern Munich won the double in 2018/19 but it’s clear a new era is beckoning.

The German champions need to build on what was a small squad last season and replace some big names, so here are some suggestions.

Leroy Sané

Bayern have made no secret of their hopes of signing Sané and they have a chance.

The winger would be perfect for the German champions, who are salivating at the chance of replacing club legend Franck Ribéry with a young star of German football.

With just two years to run on Sané’s deal, this one really could happen.

Matthijs de Ligt

We know, we know, everyone wants him but Bayern are one of the biggest clubs in the world and should be pulling out all the stops.

Though Bayern have already signed two defenders – Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard – for next season, both can also cover fullback positions and will be asked to play there at times.

In the middle, Mats Hummels isn’t getting any younger and Jérôme Boateng is being ushered out of the back door. De Ligt would become the club’s future if they can convince him to join.

Timo Werner

Now or in a year? It seems certain Werner will join Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig.

If it happens now, the club will finally have an adequate player to give Robert Lewandowski the occasional rest or have the option to play two up front.

If it doesn’t, well…

Max Kruse

…Kruse is available for nothing and would be a brilliant stop-gap for the squad while they wait for Werner to join when his contract expires in 2020.

The 31-year-old may not be a prolific goalscorer but his vision and technical brilliance sees him knit games and attacks together.

Having left Bremen, he wouldn’t be expensive. Bayern could do a hell of a lot worse.

Alexander Nübel

Like Werner, Bayern are likely to sign Nübel sooner or later. Why not now?

The 22-year-old broke into the Schalke team last season, like Manuel Neuer did at a similar age, and is now expected to become Bayern’s number one for a long time, as Manuel Neuer has.

Nübel could join the club already, as Neuer’s back up, and learn from the best for an extra year before replacing the goalkeeping legend.
