History was made 88 years ago in Uruguay.

Jules Rimet decided that to truly get a gauge on who was the best national football team in the world, a tournament needed to take place every four years to determine a winner.

In 1930, that’s exactly what happened. And after 19 minutes of the opening match, sporting immortality was made.

Frenchman Lucien Laurent was working for car manufacturer Peugeot at the time and didn’t even think he would make the squad.

But a last minute call-up saw the striker take his place on the SS Conte Verde and undertake a three week boat trip to South America.

The curtain-raiser, on July 4, was between Les Bleus and Mexico – and after 19 minutes, Laurent volleyed in to write his name in the history books.

Despite the eventual 4-1 win, France would go home after just three matches – losing to Argentina and Chile. History though, will always remember Laurent.
