Four clubs earned big road wins and the defending champions are officially in trouble after yet another humbling defeat.
Do you agree with our rankings heading into week 12?
Like Orlando City, Portland got off to a miserable start (no wins in their first five matches) only to rebound with a string of unexpected victories. Sebastián Blanco’s fantastic finish in the 86th-minute gave the Timbers a 1-0 win over rivals Seattle Sounders and their fourth straight win.
Despite the close 3-2 scoreline, New England absolutely demolished and demoralized a sluggish Toronto FC squad as they scored the opening three goals through a Cristian Penilla brace.
Another week, another impressive performance by Gyasi Zardes. His brace helped lead Columbus to one of their most complete matches of the season, a 3-0 win over the Chicago Fire. It’s a shame there’s no room for them to move up in the rankings.
FC Dallas were able to put together a rare offensive display in a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy behind Mauro Diaz’s three assists. It was just the third time FCD has scored multiple goals this season.
After winning an MLS season-high six straight wins, Orlando came crashing back down to Earth, losing 2-1 at home to Atlanta United. If they hadn’t fallen two goals behind in the first half-hour, the Lions might have had a chance to take all three points.
NYCFC bounced back from a disheartening 4-0 defeat at the hands of the New York Red Bulls to earn an impressive 2-2 draw on the road at LAFC. After starting their season off unbeaten in their first six matches (five wins, one draw), they have only won once in their last five tries (one win, two draws, two losses).
LAFC finished their first four matches at home undefeated (two wins, two draws) but were only able to put three of their 21 shots on frame against NYCFC. Luckily, it was enough.
After putting up back-to-back wins, SKC was the only team in the league to have the weekend off. Tim Melia is the hottest goalkeeper in MLS right now, earning five clean sheets in Kansas City’s last seven matches.
New York rode the back of their defence, mainly newcomer Tim Parker, and made the most of their offensive chances to knock off the Rapids 2-1 in Colorado. Since exiting the CONCACAF Champions League, the Red Bulls have won four out of five matches, including their last three. Next week they get to take on the only team better on our list…
Atlanta silenced all the doubters by putting on an impressive display on the road in an important 2-1 win over Orlando City to make their six-match winning streak come to a grinding halt. Their upcoming tie against the New York Red Bulls has a chance to be one of the best matches of the season and a preview of the Eastern Conference final.
