Real Madrid’s 3-1 Champions League final triumph over Liverpool meant fantastic news for Tottenham supporters.
Tottenham had to fight through a group of death with Atlético Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and APOEL Nicosia after being placed in Pot 3 last season. They were cruelly eliminated by Juventus in the round of 16.
Based on UEFA coefficients, Tottenham will move up to Pot 2 for the 2018-19 Champions League. Real Madrid had earned a place in Pot 2 but moves up to Pot 1 as the champions of the competition.
Since Tottenham was the top-ranked team in Pot 3, they will now take Real Madrid’ vacant place in pot 2.
Liverpool will more than likely face a difficult road back to the final, as they’ll be drawn from Pot 3. The provisional draw pots are listed below (*denotes must come through qualifying).
Pot 1: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Lokomotiv Moscow, FC Porto
Pot 2: Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica*, Napoli, FC Basel*, Tottenham Hotspur
Pot 3: Roma, Dynamo Kiev*, Schalke, Liverpool, Lyon, Monaco, FC Salzburg*, Ajax*
Pot 4: All other qualifying teams (includes Inter Milan, Valencia, Hoffenheim, Celtic*)
