The storyline going into the 2019-20 campaign was that Chivas could be relegated for the first time in club history… and little has changed since then.
Chivas are currently second-bottom in the relegation table (1.0533 points-per-game), with Veracruz on just a single point from seven matches (0.1429) after paying the 120 million peso fine last season to allow themselves to stay in the top-flight.
With Atlas (1.1316) also in the thick of the relegation fight, this weekend’s Clásico Tapatío could prove to be incredibly important at the end of the campaign.
“Chivas are fighting relegation and that fight will continue all year,” manager Tomás Boy said. “It won’t come down to just one or two games… some teams have taken off, but many games are missing still.”
Chivas are currently affected by injury, with four players at risk of missing this weekend’s huge derby. With Tomás Boy on the hot seat, he realises that a loss on Saturday could be the end of his reign in Guadalajara.
“We have enjoyed two very well-played games with this alternative team and I am happy with that part. You have to win games and managers are always subject to results.”
