Two of the top sides in the Liga MX 2018 Apertura table met on Sunday trying to close the gap with first-placed Cruz Azul.

After Santos Laguna and Club América played a fairly even first half, the home team opened the scoring five minutes after the half-time break.

Former América winger Brian Lozano served in a corner kick that Julio Furch nodded past Agustín Marchesín in the 50th minute

Paraguayan centre back Bruno Valdez equalised for the visitors with his own header from Joe Corona’s corner kick in the 61st minute.

José Abella earned his first booking in the 14th minute and referee Luis Enrique Santander showed him his second in the fourth minute of stoppage time to reduce Santos Laguna to 10 players for the final seconds.

A victory for the Guerreros would have helped Santos Laguna leap-frog América into second place, just two points off the pace. Similarly, a win in Torreón would have put the Águilas just a point behind league-leaders Cruz Azul.

As it stands, a draw does not particularly help either side’s chances of stealing the Liguilla first seed away from la Máquina with just one match left in the Apertura regular season.
