Santos Laguna came into the weekend in 10th place when they welcomed high-flying Chivas de Guadalajara to Corona Stadium.
The Sacred Flock led the league prior to Monterrey’s wild victory over Club América but could have retaken that mantle with a victory in Torreón.
Chivas were unable to remain undefeated in Clausura 2019, however, after they kicked off the final match of matchday 4
Guadalajara forward Alan Pulido nearly scored first for the visitors but veteran goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco adjusted his feet well to get down and save the right-footed effort from outside the area in the 13th minute
Vázquez scored the game’s only goal in the 19th minute with a rocket on an assist from 20-year-old left-back Jesús Angulo.
Chivas shot-stopper Raúl Gudiño similarly showed his worth with a quality save in the 30th minute.
After half-time, both teams attacked with greater urgency but neither was able to reflect that on the scoreboard. Both goalkeepers performed well in the second half but the forward players on either side failed just as often.
Santos Laguna appeared to have added an insurance goal on the counter attack in the 89th minute but Julio Furch had strayed offside in the build-up and the goal was chalked off.
After matchday 4 of the Clausura 2019, Chivas are no longer undefeated but they remain in second place in the table.
Santos enjoyed their second home win of the season after two difficult trips to Puebla. The Guerreros now have seven points after four games and sit just two points behind their opponents from Sunday.
