Leroy Sané could make his return from injury when Manchester City travel to face Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday, almost five weeks ahead of schedule.
Sané was forced off with ankle ligament damage during his side’s FA Cup fourth round victory over Cardiff City on 28 January- an injury Blues boss Pep Guardiola suggested would likely keep the German out of action for up to seven weeks.
But following the 22-year-old’s return light training on Friday, it now looks like he could be in line for a miraculous comeback when City travel to Switzerland for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in mid-week.
At least that’s according to Spanish journalist Jose Alvarez Haya who, writing on Twitter on Sunday evening, said: “If Sané feels good and keeps improving in tomorrow’s training session he will travel to Basel with the team. The most likely thing is that he does.”
Sané’s injury – which was the result of a horror tackle from Cardiff’s Joe Bennett – could have been serious enough to keep him out of the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal at the end of February but the unexpected pace of his recovery means City will perhaps now be glad they didn’t sign Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez on transfer deadline day.
Elsewhere, Gabriel Jesus – who has been sidelined with a knee injury since 31 December – could make his return when City travel to face Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup on 19 February.
