Club América have had several players in recent years who have become benchmarks of the team.

Some of them are quite controversial, as is the case of Argentine midfielder Rubens Sambueza.

Sambueza, who played at América from 2012 to 2016, won a pair of league titles as well as a pair of CONCACAF Champions League titles at the club.

During his last three seasons at the club, the now 36-year-old Sambueza captained América and now the Pachuca midfielder has asked to retire as a member of the club.

“My illusion is to return to América and retire there. I want to finish my career wearing the shirt of América,” he told ESPN.

Though he is still playing at a decent level, the reality is that América’s senior officers are preventing Miguel Herrera from bringing him back into the side.

Many still view Sambueza as the man responsible for América’s defeat in the 2016 Clausura final against Tigres, his final game at the club, as he was sent off with his side leading in extra time.

Jesús Dueñas, of course, scored the 119th-minute equaliser before Tigres won in the penalty shootout.
