David Silva is set to make his return to action when Manchester City host Watford on Tuesday evening having missed four of the last five games due to mysterious “personal reasons”.

Several of Silva’s team-mates paid tribute to him on social media after he missed the 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last month, leading to speculation that the reason for his absence was more serious than a mere injury.

The Spaniard also missed the Carabao Cup victory over Leicester City but played the full 90 minutes as his side beat Bournemouth on 23 December. He was then unavailable for two more matches – against Newcastle United and Crystal Palace – during which time it was reported in Spain that he’d been spotted in Valencia.

Blues boss Pep Guardiola suggested Silva would not be forced to play again until he was ready to do so and no information regarding the 31-year-old’s situation was ever made public.

But now, Spanish journalist Jose Alvarez Haya – who yesterday broke the news that the playmaker would return against Watford – has revealed there had been complications with Silva’s wife’s pregnancy but everything is now okay and he isn’t expected to miss any more games for the foreseeable future.

The Spain international has made 22 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring five goals and assisting 10 others.
