Uruguayan winger Jonathan Rodríguez gave the visitors the lead in the first half but Pumas equalised before the final whistle at University Stadium.

The home side nearly snuck a free kick in at the near post in the 11th minute but veteran goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco was alert.

RodrĂguez scored in the 25th minute on an ambitious give-and-go sequence with forward Julio Furch.

In the 37th minute, Alan Mendoza picked up his head and let a shot fly from 30 yards that pinged off the underside of the crossbar.

Pumas manager swapped Juan Iturbe in for Alan Mendoza at half-time and the Universitarios probably should have tied the match in the 56th minute.

Iturbe got in behind the Santos defence before cutting a cross back to Pablo Barrera in considerable space in the area. Barerra dragged his shot wide of the far post.

In the 63rd minute, Pumas midfielder Andrés Iniestra hit a hopeful header from a long throw-in back into the mixer and Santos defender Dória misjudged the situation.

The Brazilian centre back appeared to expect to redirect the service gently into his goalkeeper’s arms but Orozco had come off his line.

After the equalising goal, both teams made changes up front to push for the winner but none came. The final matchday of the Apertura regular season finished with Pumas and Santos splitting the points.

The result puts both of Sunday’s opponents tied with Monterrey on 30 points in the Liga MX table. Pumas edge out the Rayados and Guerreros by virtue of goal differential, the league’s first tie-breaker.

The felinos finish in third place behind América and regular season leaders Cruz Azul. Santos Laguna finish the Apertura and head into the Liguilla as the fourth seed.
