The Eagles went in front in the ninth minute after a controversial penalty call on Cecilio Dominguez. The Paraguayan stepped up and slotted his penalty past Nicolás Vikonis.

It seemed that the first half was going to end 1-0, but a pair of goals awaited. First Lucas Cavallini drew Puebla level in the 43rd minute, heading home Alejandro Chumacero’s cross.

Two minutes later, Oribe Peralta gave the Eagles the lead again. The Mexican striker took advantage of a bouncing ball in the box to give Club América a 2-1 lead at the break.

In the second half, Club América continued to be the better side, but Puebla endured the attacks and tied the match on a set piece.

Daniel Arreola beautifully connected on Pablo Diaz’s corner kick to tie the match at the hour-mark.

The Eagles looked like they would have to settle for the lone point when Edson Álvarez was sent off in the 88th minute for his second yellow card.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Club América would win the match in dramatic fashion from a set piece of their own.

From a free kick, Guido Rodríguez’s initial header from point-blank range was saved, but Bruno Valdez was there to slam home the rebound and start the celebrations.

Puebla stay on 13 points and the loss will be a dramatic hit in their bid for a post-season berth.
