New York City FC had David Villa back in their starting XI for the first time since Matchday 2, but that didn’t stop Portland Timbers from putting an end to the Cityzens unbeaten run.

The Oregon club trashed NYCFC 3-0 with an effective attack that only needed 25% of the possession to dismantle Patrick Vieira’s defensive scheme.

Sebastián Blanco opened the score with a header that didn’t seem to be dangerous, but goalkeeper Sean Johnson’s miscommunication with his defender proved to be fatal.

Blanco had missed a couple of easier chances earlier.

In the latter minutes of the first half, Portland scored a second goal through a Diego Valeri shot that Johnson denied. But the rebound ended on an easy tap-in for striker Fanendo Adi.

NYCFC lost all hope of maintaining their unbeaten run when Larrys Mabiala headed a corner-kick taken by Valeri into the back of the net.

New York City are still on top of the standings table, but the only undefeated team left in the season are FC Dallas.

Portland struggled at the beginning of the season to get a win under their new coach, Giovanni Savarese, but have now won back-to-back matches.
