The president of Liga MX has revealed his concern for the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City – one of the world’s great football arenas.
The Azteca has played host to two World Cup finals and was the venue of the Match of the Century between West Germany and Italy in 1970.
But over recent years the stadium has fallen into a state of disrepair, with very little money being spent on the ground.
Enrique Bonilla, though, is hopeful that the symbol of football in Mexico can be restored to its former glory.
“We will do our best to ensure that the situation around the Azteca will be reversed,” he told reporters.
“As part of the Mexican football family, we have to support the stadium and make sure that it recovers.
“It can only be a good thing for Mexico and for Liga MX.”
The NFL were due to host a Monday night game between Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams at the stadium next week but the game has been moved to Los Angeles due to concerns surrounding the pitch.
Estadio Azteca currently plays host to Club América and Cruz Azul, as well as most Mexican national team matches.
