Despite already winning a pair of trophies, Flamengo manager Jorge Jesus wants to reinforce the squad even further.
With Rodinei going to Internacional on loan, the Brazilian champions are on the hunt for a right-back and hope to have business completed by March.
Jesus manager wants a player that will accept his role as Rafinha’s back-up but will still have the quality to perform when called upon, which has made negotiating for players very difficult.
Atlético Nacional captain Daniel Muñoz was a player that was approved by the boss, however, the Flamengo hierarchy believes the Colombian giants are asking for much more than the player is worth due to Flamengo’s current reputation.
Other players are being monitored, though their names are being kept confidential so that current negotiations are not hindered.
Flamengo’s current right-back options, aside from Rafinha, are João Lucas and Matheus França. França has been participating with the club’s U-20 side who have qualified for the Copa Libertadores U-20 semi-finals after successfully negotiating the group stage.
The U-20s will, coincidentally, face Independiente del Valle in the semis, with the winners taking on the winners of River Plate and Libertad in the final.
As for the Recopa Sudamericana, Flamengo and IdV go into Wednesday’s clash after last week’s 2-2 draw needing a win to be crowned champions. Any draw will force 30 minutes of extra time and a potential shootout.
