Ahead of the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana semi-final tie with Independiente del Valle, Corinthians fell to Fluminense 1-0 and dropped out of the Brasileirão top-four.
At the Mané Garrincha, goalkeeper Cássio had a rare howler, leading the way to being criticised by fans all over Brazil.
However, manager Fábio Carille refused to blame the legendary goalkeeper for the loss.
“Mistakes happen and Cássio has credibility for what he has done for Corinthians and what he is still yet to do,” said Carille.
“It was a mistake that happens. We are human beings. If we make a mistake, we make a mistake. The player messed up on the field. But he has all the credibility.”
Corinthians are now in fifth place at the half-way stage of the season, level with rivals São Paulo, with Internacional jumping a single point above them.
