End of season review: Bayern Munich

A sixth consecutive Bundesliga title ultimately wasn’t enough to satisfy Bayern Munich this season.

Despite a rocky start, the German giants recovered to stroll to yet another German championship. Once again, though, there was disappointment in the cup competitions.

Player of the season: Joshua Kimmich

It’s only a year since Philipp Lahm retired but Kimmich has already made the right-back spot very much his own. His performances have been so impressive that his predecessor has hardly been missed at all.

Kimmich  is an excellent defender but it’s going forward where he really stands out. Clocking up 10 Bundesliga assists and four Champions League goals – including two in the semi-finals – he’s become crucial at both ends of the pitch.

Still just 23, it’s already quite clear he will become a Bayern Munich captain.

How did the manager do?

Which one? Carlo Ancelotti did poorly, Jupp Heycnkes performed incredibly well for the most part.

There was a little doubt surrounding Ancelotti heading into the campaign after he failed to really win the players over during his first campaign. That shone through after a poor run of form and he was gone before the end of September.

The legend that is Jupp Heynckes returned, more or less to do the club a favour, and turned things around quicker than anyone would have imagined. A cup final shock wasn’t aided by Heynckes’ substitutions but he got everything else right, including in the unfortunate Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

Disappointment of the season: David Alaba

What has happened to the Austrian. Three years ago he was one of the finest talents in the world, capable of playing almost any role in any position.

Since Pep Guardiola left, however, he’s struggled to find his way. Used exclusively as an orthodox left-back, Alaba has become decreasingly reliable and effective.

We’ll see if things change under Nico Kovač.

Who needs to go?

Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben will stay another year, which complicates things a little. There probably isn’t space for both Arturo Vidal and Thiago in the squad so a decision has to be made on them.

Who should be brought in?

A young winger with constant goal threat to play on the opposite side of Kingsley Coman. We think Manchester United’s wantaway 22-year-old Anthony Martial would be perfect.

Bayern have already sealed the signing of all-round midfielder Leon Goretzka.

If Robert Lewandowski manages to force his way out, Bayern will have the funds to replace him with another big-name striker.
