Chivas learned on Wednesday that eight of their players have been included in the preliminary squad for Mexico’s U-23 squad that will participate in the CONCACAF Pre-Olympic Tournament – the most of any club.
The tournament, which takes place from 20 March to 1 April, will award the final two tickets to this summer’s Tokyo Olympics.
Of the 50 players that were named into the squad, there were eight Chivas first-team players included: Jesús Angulo, Uriel Antuna, Fernando Beltrán, Cristian Calderón, Ronaldo Cisneros, José Juan Macías, Gilberto Sepúlveda, and Alexis Vega).
It is expected that Mexico U-23 manager Jaime Lozano would call the final 20 players into camp 10 days before the start of the tournament, which means the players would arrive just after their important Classic Tapatío duel with Atlas.
Luckily for Chivas, even if Mexico clinch their place, the players would only be at risk of missing two matches: against Rayados on 14 March and at Querétaro on 22 March.
Though the condition of the players would be up in the air, it’s possible they could be match-fit for their clash with Monarcas on 4 April.
