Columbus Crew were able to take the three points against San Jose Earthquakes with a late goal from Mike Grella.

The ex New York Red Bulls winger came in as a substitute in the second half and scored the winning goal in the 84th minute. That was Grella’s first goal since October 2016, when he managed to net precisely against the Crew.

Grella barely played in 2017 with the Red Bulls and at the end of the year he was out of a contract. Colorado Rapids selected him in the Re-entry Draft but was eventually traded to Columbus.

Harrison Afful scored the opening goal in the first half.

And was later canceled out by Danny Hoesen’s equaliser just moments before half time.

Columbus had only salvaged a point in their last four matches, a terrible streak snapped on Saturday night by unlikely hero Grella.
