Wednesday night proved to be one of the craziest nights of the CONCACAF Champions League in some time, as several big-name sides (Montreal Impact, Tigres, América) were taken to the brink of elimination by far-lesser opposition.

However, at the end of the day, the giants survived and are all heading to the CCL quarter-finals.

Club América and Miguel Herrera were just 10 minutes away from going home early, as former Santos Laguna striker Agustín Herrera bagged a penalty just after the hour-mark to give Guatemalan side Comunicaciones a shock lead at the Estadio Azteca.

However, Allen Yanes was sent off just six minutes later and América took full advantage being a man up. 10 minutes before full-time, an Emanuel Aguilera penalty sent the tie directly to penalties after their second-straight 1-1 draw.

Both sides were perfect through the first three rounds and after Andrés Ibargüen put América up 4-3, Herrera, who converted his penalty during regulation, had his attempt fantastically saved by Óscar Jiménez.

Sebastián Córdova would step up and drill his penalty to send América to the quarter-finals, where they will take on Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United.

América and Atlanta went head-to-head in last year’s Campeones Cup, where the Americans emerged 3-2 victors.
