The 2-2 result from the Nemesio Díez Stadium on 29 November suited Club América well. Their two away goals gave América an upper hand when they hosted Toluca on Sunday.

The home team struck early but a late attempted comeback from Toluca nearly flipped the script.

América’s Colombian forward Roger Martínez caught Toluca napping and scored in just the third minute of the match.

Paraguayan defender Bruno Valdez doubled the azulcrema lead on the night in the 24th minute, continuing his knack for scoring headed goals in big games.

Club América were comfortable heading into the half-time break and might have thought their night would get easier when Toluca were reduced to ten players.

Rodrigo Salinas earned a straight red card in the 52nd minute for an ugly stamp from behind. Five minutes after taking a numerical advantage, the Águilas scored their third goal of the night and fifth of the series.

Veteran right back Paul Aguilar scored in the 56th minute with a first-time volley from 18 yards out on a corner kick.

Perhaps suffering from over-confidence, Toluca set about probing the weaknesses in América’s defence.

Two former azulcrema midfielders struck against the Mexico City team. Rubens Sambueza got the visitors on the board in the 68th minute with a well-struck free kick to beat goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín.

William da Silva put the home team under real pressure after finishing a flowing attacking move in the 86th minute. The Brazilian slipped a clever flick from Enrique Triverio into the back of the net.

With the aggregate score poised at 5-4, one more goal from Toluca would have put them through with three away goals in the series.

Unfortunately for the Diablos Rojos, Marchesín was able to marshal his back-line until the final whistle.

The result moves Club América through to the Liguilla Semi-finals where they will meet local rival Pumas UNAM over two legs.
