On Monday, on the final day of the transfer window, Sevilla announced the acquisition of 31-year-old striker Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández from West Ham.
The Mexican international signed a three-year contract after the Andalusian side paid a reported €7.5m ($8.25m) for his services.
The news will come as a disappointment for Chivas supporters, who were hoping to either bring him in this window or to land him on a free transfer next season after his West Ham contract expired.
However, it’s not all bad for the Mexican giants as they stand to bring in a good amount of cash thanks to FIFA’s solidarity mechanism.
Since the 108-time Mexico international came through the Chivas academy and remained until he was 21 years old, Chivas are entitled to 4.5% of any transfer fee.
Therefore, Chivas stand to earn roughly $375,000 for his sale. After selling Chicharito to Manchester United for €7.5m ($8.25m) back in 2010, Chivas have earned more than $2m in solidarity payments thanks to his big-money moves to Bayer Leverkusen and West Ham.
