Despite reports that Ricardo Peláez nearly had the Chivas sporting director job in the bag, there appears to be a new number one candidate for the job.

According to Fox Sports, Javier Aguirre is now preferred over Peláez and that Néstor de la Torre had also earned an interview.

The reporters state that Peláez has been asking for too much control over the club. It should be noted that Peláez quit Cruz Azul last month claiming that he was not allowed to be involved in picking their new manager.

Though Aguirre has a rich connection to Chivas as a player (playing 181 times from 1987 until his retirement in 1993), his appointment would be a pecuiliar one considering he has had no involvement with Liga MX whatsoever since managing Pachuca in 2001.

Aguirre has also never had a role outside of management. Aguirre’s was most recently the manager of the Egypt national team where he and the rest of his staff were sacked after a disappointing round-of-16 exit on home soil in this year’s AFCON tournament.

The 60-year-old was the Mexico manager for both the 2002 and 2010 World Cups as well.
