Chivas have announced that the club’s first team players and staff have agreed to have their salaries deferred starting in April.

With all professional football in Mexico suspended indefinitely due to the Covid-19 pandemic, clubs are being forced to find ways to deal with the financial difficulties the crisis is causing.

Earlier in the week, the Chivas board had said it was not considering lowering players’ wages.

On Friday night, club president Amaury Vergara took to Twitter to announce the deferment and thank those involved for agreeing to the measure.

“We are facing one of the greatest challenges of recent times, not only due to the impact on health and social level in the world, but also due to the repercussions that the contingency caused by COVID-19 has brought to the economy,” Vergara posted.

“And in this context, I would like to deeply thank the players, coaching staff and management for adding to the well-being of the Chivas staff, by accepting the deferred salary scheme starting in April.”

Several other Liga MX sides have announced salary changes in response to the suspension of play.

They include Atlas, Santos, Pachuca, Monterrey, Querétaro and Tijuana.

After a disappointing start to the Clausura campaign, Chivas had bounced back and were sitting fifth in the table before the league ground to a halt after Round 10.
