The victory of Atlas over Veracruz and the defeat of Chivas against Lobos BUAP in matchday 13 put Guadalajara in a very precarious position.
Chivas are currently just one point from being the bottom side in next year’s relegation table.
Veracruz will start with zero units after they pay the 120 million peso (€5.6m) fine for the relegation that they have already sealed. Their owner has reportedly put the club up for sale for about 1 billion pesos (€44.4m).
Chivas nearly suffered the same fate in 2014 and are one of just two teams, along with América, to have never been relegated in Mexican top-flight history.
What’s worse is that Chivas are strapped for cash and it’s not guaranteed that they will pay next year’s fine should they face the drop.
Here is how the current relegation table looks for the 2019-20 season.
14th: Lobos, 36 points from 30 games, 1.2000
15th: Atlas, 70 points from 64 games, 1.0938
16th: Chivas, 68 points from 64 games, 1.0625
17th: Queretaro, 67 points from 64 games, 1.0469
18: Veracruz, 0 points from 0 games, 0.0000
