For all of the drama and emotions produced by Friday’s matchday 9 draw between Club América and Monarcas Morelia, Bruno Valdez definitely was not enjoying himself.
The Paraguayan centre back was shown a second yellow card in the 60th minute, reducing the Eagles to ten players for the very tense final half-hour.
After the match, the 26-year-old defender took the blame for preventing his team from mounting a stronger comeback.
“Because of my irresponsibility, we had to play with ten men. Because if things had been 11 v 11, it would have been different.”
After his second bookable offense on the hour-mark, the Paraguay international was quick to praise the work of his colleagues who remained on the pitch.
“More than anything I want to congratulate my team-mates and for the point they earned.”
Valdez pointed to the mental fortitude in his side which allowed the fight back to draw.
“The requirement on this team, is to make the draw little by little. But the circumstances and the claw was poised to rescue a point.”
“When you do not play well, you need to get the individual quality and there is plenty of that in this team.”
América next plays their make-up fixture from matchday 1 against Necaxa on 5 March.
