Arsenal are reportedly looking to make a move for Mainz defender Jean-Philippe Gbamin, with the German club demanding a fee of €30m.

The Ivory Coast international has become an integral part of the Opel Arena outfit since arriving from Lens in 2016, starting 29 of their 34 Bundesliga matches last term and earning rave reviews for his commanding performances.

A whole host of Premier League clubs have been linked with his services this summer, but RMC in France believe that the Gunners are at the front of the queue.

Unai Emery is thought to be desperately seeking defensive cover, having already brought in Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus on a free and on the verge of completing Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ move from Borussia Dortmund.

Mainz are believed to be willing to sell the 22-year-old but are quoting a price of €30m.

The Gunners however, value Gbamin at something close to €20m.
