Antonio Briseño returned to Mexico after two years away in Portugal with one thing on his mind: The 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Though he hasn’t earned a cap with El Tri just yet, the 25-year-old is hoping that his high-profile move to Chivas will change that.

“That’s right, I have very clear objectives: one of them is in the medium-term is to go to the World Cup in Qatar.

“The showcase that is Chivas is much greater than being at Feirense. Tata Martino has told me that it does not matter what league you play in, he sees Liga MX as very competitive and that whoever is better and whoever is playing will be called up.

“I want to show myself here, I want to play, I want to have minutes and be called up to the national team. Of course it is an objective. I say it because I want to go.”

Briseño will be 28 years old by the time Qatar comes around and is also targeting the 2026 World Cup that Mexico will co-host along with Canada and the United States.

“Yes, by then I’ll be 28 – a very good age. But the next one, I will be 32. I hope I have an excellent career and have two World Cups under my belt.

“I have to imagine myself there, I have to say that I will be there, because if I don’t believe it, nobody else is going to believe it and I believe that if I continue what I am doing, the call will arrive.

“It will depend on me to earn a place there.”

Mexico will next be in action just over a month from now when they head to the United States to face the USMNT and Argentina.
