Barcelona captain Andrés Iniesta has suffered an injury.

It has been confirmed that the midfielder is suffering from a calf problem following the tests the 33-year-old underwent on Monday.

“Andrés Iniesta, for his part, has a problem in his right calf and his recovery will determine his return to action for the coming matches,” Barça said in a statement.

Iniesta was a substitute in the victory over Real Sociedad during the weekend and did not even warm up for the dramatic LaLiga clash. When speaking about this team selection, Ernesto Valverde explained:

“We have a lot of games now. This was also a game with some special circumstances, such as the wet pitch, the time between the last game,” he said.

“I thought that it would be better to go with André Gomes, because La Real have a powerful right side.

“Andrés is fine, he has a little problem, but he’s fine and I preferred that he didn’t play.”

Iniesta is unlikely to be included in Barça’s starting XI in the Copa del Rey clash against Espanyol on Wednesday, and remains a doubt for their trip to Real Betis this Sunday.

Samuel Umtiti and Paco Alcácer are back in training, whilst Barcelona’s new record signing Philippe Coutinho is expected to make his LaLiga debut some time in the next couple of weeks.
