Cruz Azul 2-3 Club Leon

Three matches into 2019 and Cruz Azul have yet to win a match, just a season removed from nearly winning the Liga MX – Copa MX double.

The defending Copa MX champions were stunned early after a golazo from Leon’s Angel Mena.

Cruz Azul leveled the match in the 20th minute through Jonathan Rodriguez despite the Leon goalkeeper getting two hands on the ball.

Leon would be back in front nine minutes later through a Milton Caraglio own goal.

In the 53rd minute, Rubens Sambueza scored his first goal for his new club. His free-kick took a massive deflection off a Cruz Azul defender to put Leon ahead 3-1.

Though Rodriguez would complete his brace 15 minutes later from the spot, Cruz Azul were unable to overcome the two-goal deficit.

Though Cruz Azul are on the bottom of Group E, they are still very much in the competition after second-division side Alebrijes de Oaxaca defeated Leon 1-0 last week.

Leones Negros 0-2 Pumas

Pumas took care of business in Group I, defeating second-division Leones Negros 2-0 thanks to goals from Felipe Mora and Victor Malcorra.

Pumas looked in full control of the match and finally scored just before half-time, as Mora finished off a great move thanks to some poor defending.

Though Pumas never looked like losing, they put the match away in the 85th minute after Malcorra converted from 12 yards.

Last week, Pumas dropped the opening match of Group I to Atlas by a 1-0 scoreline and will face them this Sunday in Liga MX play.

QuerĂŠtaro 1-3 Dorados

Diego Maradona’s side scored a Copa MX upset, defeating Liga MX side Querétaro in the opening match in Group C.

Seven-time United States international forward Rubio Rubin opened the scoring for Dorados in the 25th minute with an absolute peach of a free-kick.

Querétaro’s defence were in shambles all night and they were made to pay for it. In the 58th minute, Amaury Escoto got behind the defence at the half-way line and was able to double the Dorados lead.

QuerĂŠtaro fought back and cut the Dorados lead in half late in the match after a scramble in front of goal was finished off by Ake Loba.

With the clock running down, Benjamin Palazuelos secured the victory after a QuerÊtaro defender attempted to head the ball back to the goalkeeper, however, the shot-stopper was out of the box, allowing Palazuelos to tap the ball into the empty net.

Correcaminos 2-1 UAEM Potros

In the lone battle between Ascensio MX teams, Correcaminos scored a stoppage-time winner to down Potros.

Sergio Teran opened the scoring just after the hour-mark, however, Potros would net an 88th-minute equaliser through Diego Castellanos.

It wouldn’t matter as the roadrunners saved the best for last, as Esneyder Mena scored a 92nd-minute winner to bring Correcaminos level on points with Monarcas in Group F.
